To visit the city, several circuits are proposed to you.
A stroll at the heart of the medieval city will allow to report you its rich architectural heritage. Place of secular house, the legend tells that Semur was built by Hercule during his(her, its) return of Spain.
Ii is in 606, in the charter of foundation of the Abbey of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, that we find the first written track o Semur, named then sene muro : old bulwarks so underlining the defensive and ancestral character of the site. In the course of the centuries, Semur develops, to such a point that in 1276 she benefits from a map of postage granted by Dike de Bourgogne Robert II.
The city takes all its scale in the middle of the XIVth century, at the time of the Hundred Years’War, when Duke Philippe le Hardi decides to strengthen the natural fortifications of the site by surrounding walls spread out by tours and by impressive donjon splitting directly the castle and the village.
In 1589, Semur knows his ultimate seat. During the wars of the League, the city will be subjected by the marshal of Tavannes, Henri IV decides on the dismantling of the fortifications in a prescription of 1602. The city loses its defensive vocation to become the capital of the bailwick of Auxois, with all that it contains as privileges (présidial, attic with salt).
We preserved certain number of monuments bound to these periods :
Besides doors Guillier (XIVth century) and Sauvigny (of the XVth century which marked formerly the entered of the Village), who will allow you to end in the collegiate church Notre-Dame (built in 1225 and reshaped at several opportunities, in particular by Viollet-le-Duc in the XIXth torch of the Burgundian Flamboyant Gothic, do not hesitate to push farther your steps to contemplate the donjon reconstructed in XIIIth century, and which after its dismantling in the XVIIth century left us the circular tours of angle of the old citadel:.
The Tower of l’Orle d’Or, the highest and the most massive is the chief tower of the donjon (44 meters high), with its walls the base of which is 5 meters inthickness. Her summit was formerly encircled by golden metal. Her crack, visible by arriving at Semur, date of 1602, when king Henri IV decides on the dismantling of the fortifications.
The tower of the Gehenna is located a little farther, was used as attic to store salt.
The tower of the Prison is visible only from the valley and served as its name indicates it as a prison.
The tower Margot, leaned to the theater was also of use as attic to store salt.
The theater was inaugurated in 1847, and destroyed by a fire in 1901. It was thus reconstructed as before by the municipality, and was finished in 1904.
The walk of ramparts, recently restored, offers a very beautiful view on river Armançon.
